MGB GT
The MGB GT race car holds a special place in the history of motorsports and is deeply intertwined with the legacy of the Huffaker Motorsport company. The MGB GT, a variant of the iconic MGB sports car, was extensively modified by Huffaker Motorsport for racing purposes. With its distinctive shape and formidable performance, the MGB GT race car became a force to be reckoned with on the tracks during the 1960s and 1970s. The MGB GT race car showcased its capabilities in various racing events, including endurance races like the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. It also found success in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) competitions, often competing against strong rivals like Porsche and Triumph.
Scott Brown, our friend and fiercely competitive Huffaker driver brings us his MGB GT (shown above) and shares with us his beginnings with the vehicle
“November of 2011, my best friend/brother passed away suddenly leaving me broken and very empty. Greg introduced me to MGs in the mid 70s when he brought home a 66 MGB wire wheel roadster. We jumped in the car and drove directly to the coast on a rather well known northern twisty California road called 17. The sound, smell and the nimble little rascal won my heart before we could see the ocean. In honor of my brother, December of 2012 I purchased a 2 owner California GT that had been restored in 1980 by Moss Motors. A perfect candidate for a GT racer - unmolested, rust free and all there. I had the GT delivered directly to Huffaker Engineering in early January. Joe and his team began the process to strip her down to a bare tub in order to build what will be Huffaker's first and only MGB GT build. Sand blasted down to bare metal, the entire car will be seam welded as well as adding any support where needed taking some of Huffaker's extensive pro car building knowledge into play. Built to 1967 SCCA GCR specs The GT will be #9 (Greg's birthday is May 9th), and will be painted Black with an orange valance to honor Greg and his orange MGB roadster. “
What sets the MGB GT race car apart is its significance to the Huffaker Motorsport company. Huffaker, led by the legendary race car builder Joe Huffaker Sr., played a pivotal role in refining and enhancing the MGB GT's performance for racing. The company's expertise in engineering and fine-tuning the car's suspension, aerodynamics, and drivetrain allowed the MGB GT to achieve notable victories and establish a formidable reputation on the track. The MGB GT race car became a symbol of Huffaker Motorsport's expertise and passion for motorsports. It represented their commitment to pushing the limits of performance and their dedication to crafting race cars that could compete at the highest level. Even today, the legacy of the MGB GT race car lives on, as it continues to inspire motorsport enthusiasts and serves as a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Huffaker Motorsport.
